How to Back Up Your Website

Updated 29 June 20261 views2 min read

Backups give you a safe copy of your site to fall back on if anything goes wrong. This guide shows you how to create a manual backup and download a copy to keep yourself.

Good to know: backups run automatically too

Your website is backed up automatically, so you're already covered day to day. Even so, it's a good idea to create your own backup before making big changes, such as updating software or editing your site.

Step 1 — Open your website in your control panel

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Open your control panel.
  3. Select the website you want to back up.

Step 2 — Open the Backups area

  1. Open the Advanced menu for your website.
  2. Select Backups.

Here you'll see your existing backups, including ones created automatically.

Step 3 — Create a manual backup

  1. Select Create backup.
  2. Add a short note so you can recognise this backup later (for example, "before plugin update").
  3. Select Backup now.

Your backup will be created and added to the list of available backups.

Step 4 — Download a copy to keep

For extra peace of mind, you can download a backup and store your own copy somewhere safe, such as your computer or cloud storage.

  1. Find the backup you want in the list.
  2. Choose the option to download it.
  3. Save the file somewhere secure.

You can also upload a backup later if you need to bring a saved copy back into your control panel.

Next steps

You now have a fresh backup and, if you chose to, your own copy to keep. When you need to use a backup, see our guide on restoring from a backup. If you have any questions, open a support ticket and we'll be glad to help.
